Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. In the1860s, following the Civil War, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding annual encomiums to these countless fallen soldiers. They honored the soldiers sacrifice of life by decorating their graves with flowers and supplicate prayers of gratitude and remembrance. The day actually became an official federal holiday in 1971. I love the origin of this holiday we now call Memorial Day!
Memorial Day is a day to honor those who gave their lives to give us the freedoms we enjoy today. It is also a day for families and friends to come together and celebrate outdoors!
Here are 4 great decorating outdoor ideas for your guest this weekend and on into the 4th of July celebration!
1. Put down some red, white and blue bandannas on your outdoor or indoor party table as a runner! It looks amazing and adds a nice patriotic look to your event.
2. Decorate by the food you serve! My favorite is a dish with blue berries (for the blue), strawberries (for the red), and Whip Cream (for the white). Makes a visually pleasing dish and it truly is yummy! I love cupcakes using white icing and little flags as the decoration too!
3. I love putting out red and white flowers in my blue pots! You could make it your own by decorating your with a flag as well.
4. Paint your yard with stars or even a flag. Yes, they absolutely sell paint that is not harmful to your grass and washes away with the next rain! Your yard would be the most expressive patriotic landscape in the neighborhood!
Enjoy your weekend and I truly hope you enjoyed these little holiday decorating ideas! ~ Trish Whitsell
