Limewash vs Venetian Plaster: Which Is Right for Your Home?
By Trish Whitsell | Beautifully Done Interior Design
You saved the photo. The furniture was simple, the colors were quiet, and somehow the walls made the whole room feel special. That soft, cloudy finish may have been limewash. The smooth surface with depth and a little sheen may have been Venetian plaster. When comparing limewash vs Venetian plaster, the difference goes beyond appearance. The wall underneath, the application, and the way you use the room all matter. Before you tell your painter, “I want this,” here is what to know.

Why Textured Walls Are Getting Attention
There is real search interest behind these finishes. Houzz compared U.S. searches on its platform from January through March 2026 with the same months in 2025. Searches for “limewash interior paint” increased 53%, while “Venetian plaster” increased 94%. Those figures describe searches on Houzz, rather than all Google searches. They do show growing interest in walls with more visual depth. A textured finish can give a quiet room something interesting to look at without adding another pattern or filling every empty space. But the finish still needs to work with your home.
Limewash vs Venetian Plaster:

What Is the Difference? Limewash is a lime-based coating generally brushed onto a compatible surface. Its overlapping strokes create variation in color, giving the wall a soft, mottled appearance. Think gentle clouds rather than one perfectly even color. Portola’s application guidance describes this brushwork as central to the effect. Venetian plaster is a decorative plaster finish. Traditional lime-based versions can contain marble powder and are worked onto the surface with a trowel. The appearance depends on the product and application: some finishes are matte or satin, while others are polished to a high gloss. Firenzecolor’s Marmorino KS and Grassello Fino illustrate that range. “Textured” does not always mean rough. A plaster wall can look layered and still feel smooth. For a soft, cloudy look, I would explore limewash samples. For a smoother, more tailored surface with the possibility of sheen, I would explore Venetian plaster. The finished sample should guide the decision.
Choose the Finish for the Room You Actually Use:
Picture a bedroom with warm wood furniture, simple bedding, and soft lighting. A quiet limewash finish could add interest while keeping the room restful in appearance. Now picture a dining room with an antique table, upholstered chairs, and a statement light fixture. A softly polished plaster could give the room depth without introducing wallpaper. In a hallway where children, pets, bags, and hands regularly meet the walls, cleaning requirements deserve just as much attention as color. Ask what the exact finish can tolerate and how damage is repaired before approving it. The prettiest sample is only useful if you can live comfortably with the finished wall.
Can Limewash Go Over Painted or Textured Drywall?:
Some limewash products can go over painted drywall with the correct preparation. The instructions are specific to the product. For example, Portola calls for its Limeproof Undercoat on previously painted walls in good condition. Do not expect a decorative coating to erase existing wall texture. Portola specifically notes that its limewash does not hide the texture already underneath it. If your inspiration photograph shows a smooth wall and yours has a pronounced orange-peel or knockdown finish, discuss surface preparation first. Otherwise, you may approve the color and still be disappointed by the result.
What About Cleaning, Splashes, and Touch-Ups? :
Check the care instructions before choosing a specialty finish. Portola describes its unsealed limewash as non-wipeable. Its optional sealer permits gentle cleaning, but the manufacturer states that it is neither waterproof nor stainproof. Touch-ups can also remain visible or require recoating a larger area. A bathroom inspiration photo does not establish that the same finish is suitable inside your shower. Ask for a system specifically approved for the intended exposure, including the substrate, waterproofing, finish, and protection required. Also ask the installer to demonstrate the proposed care and repair method on a sample. Knowing how the wall will look after everyday use is part of making a good selection.
Let the Wall Work With the Rest of Your Home:
For a Northwest Arkansas home with warm oak floors, I would start by sampling a soft mushroom or warm ivory finish beside the actual flooring. For darker wood and traditional furnishings, I might explore a deeper taupe or muted green. These are starting points, not a formula. Existing stone, cabinets, upholstery, and daylight should influence the final choice. If your room already has strongly patterned stone, a busy rug, and detailed cabinetry, keep the wall treatment quiet. If the room feels flat, a little more variation may be exactly what it needs. You do not have to use the finish throughout the house. One carefully selected room can be enough.
Approve a Sample Before You Approve the Room:
Ask for a generous sample made with the actual product, color, application technique, and any proposed sealer. View it upright in the room during the day and again with the lights on at night. Look at the amount of movement as well as the color. Decide whether you like the sheen. Hold your flooring, fabric, and countertop samples beside it. Ask for an itemized quote that includes preparation, materials, labor, protection, and any sealing. Comparing the price of a can with the price of a finished plaster wall will not tell you what either project actually costs.
